Donkey in the Well – A Life Lesson
This life lesson was forwarded to me in an email by a very dear person in my life who had just found out they were being forced to leave their job. As most of us would be heart broken at that kind of news, this person saw through the disappointment and sent this story to me. After I read it, I thought “Wow”. I can learn a life lesson here. I don’t know who originally wrote it, so who ever you are, thank you very much!

“One day a farmer’s donkey fell down into a well. The animal cried piteously for hours as the farmer tried to figure out what to do.
Finally, he decided the donkey was old, and the well needed to be covered up anyway; it just wasn’t worth it to retrieve the donkey.
He invited all his neighbors to come over and help him. They all grabbed a shovel and began to shovel dirt into the well. At first, the donkey realized what was happening and cried horribly. Then, to everyone’s amazement he quieted down.
A few shovel loads later, the farmer finally looked down the well. He was astonished at what he saw. With each shovel of dirt that hit his back, the donkey did something amazing. He shook it off and took a step up.
As the farmer’s neighbors continued to shovel dirt on top of the animal, he would shake it off and take a step up.
imuran 150 mg alt=”Donkey out of the Well” width=”150″ height=”150″ />
Pretty soon, everyone was amazed as the donkey stepped up over the edge of the well and happily trotted off!
Life is going to shovel dirt on you, all kinds of dirt. The trick to getting out of the well is to shake it off and take a step up. Each of our troubles is a steppingstone. We can get out of the deepest wells just by not stopping, never giving up! Shake it off and take a step up.
Remember the five simple lessons in life to be happy:
Free your heart from hatred – Forgive
Free your mind from worries – Most never happen
Live simply and appreciate what you have
Give more
Expect less
The rest of the story….
The donkey later came back, and bit the farmer who had tried to bury him. The gash from the bite got infected and the farmer eventually died in agony from septic shock.
The moral of the story….
When you do something wrong, and try to cover your ass, it always comes back to bite you.”

Hi Sue,

Peter
Thanks for the invite, Sue. Also, thanks for the great story. It’s very appropriate for the times we are in.
You realize as you get more seasoned in life, just about everyone has to experience and overcome some form of hardship. It will test your resilience and strength and you will be required to dig very deep inside and step up and move forward. Makes you stronger.
nice blog page you got Sue. will visit from to time. good to connect with you.
Hi Sue
It is definetely a very insirational story.
Sue,
Hahhaha… I absolutely love this story. It is a testament to the indominatable spirit that lies in the heart of every winner.
I couldn’t tell you how many times there were in my past where it would have been MUCH easier to quit on my dream of network marketing success. I could have quit when that person that I cold called (old school marketing) hung up on me after chewing me out. I could have quit when that new recruit who I just “knew” was going to hit it big was nowhere to be found after one week in the biz. I could have quit when I didn’t make any money after having been in the industry a considerable amount of time.
The fact of the matter is that there were plenty of opportunities to quit and I thank the Lord for him blessing me with the faith and strength to bypass these roadblocks and keep moving forward.
If I had quit I wouldn’t be experiencing the success that is my daily reality now and would have regretted it probably for the rest of my life.
So this is a message of hope to anyone who would read this message: As long as you don’t quit and apply yourself diligently to developing the necessary skill sets that lend themselves to success in this industry there is no way that you will fail.
True and utter massive success is within your grasp. What will you do with this opportunity?
To Our Massive Success,
John

Very funny Sue, I loved that ending.
I was attracted to this article because I thought I was the only person who would ever consider using a donkey story to get a message across – seems I am wrong!!
Very strong messages in there also – good article.

Wow Sue,
That is a great story thank you…I’ve had quite a bit dirt shoveled on my back this past year….but I’m stepping up and walking away too. Hats off to the donkey.
Great story! And can relate. Been shaking dirt off my back for several years now, getting ready to climb out of the hole. Or~ another words, spending countless dollars on advertising to no avail, building up web presents for a massive domination in Colorado House Painting, because I refuse to let the shovels of society bury me alive, being a Painter all my life.
Normally mostly write about house painting, but went astray, thinking of funniest article to date. “2 Butt House Painter” enjoy~

Thanks Sue, that’s a great story. I have heard it before, but thoroughly enjoyed reading it again. That is a life lesson that I learned long ago. That’s all you can do, shake it off and keep on going. Just keep on keeping on!
Thanks again,
Wanda
Thanks Wanda for taking time to re-read it. Many people have said they’ve heard the donkey story before. I never had. I just had to share the life lesson in it. “Shake it off – Step UP!” Make it a great day, Wanda.
Hi Sue,
Very nice story – will tell it to the world.
Wish we all were like this donkey – never give up.
Thanks, Kobi. I agree with you. Never give up!

I’ve read this before, it is very cute, and made me think. I lost my job due to a 4 million dollar budget cut at the Harford County Health Dept. in Aug. 09. Finding a job has been very hard, thus far unsucessful. It’s sad to say Unemployment pays more than the grocery store. I’ve applied at several places who just state I’m over qualified, which I think is a joke! I just want to work, and earn a living. But God had a better plan than I could ever come up with
Relying on him has def. got me through so far!!! Thank for sharing and reminding me of the donkey!
I’ve heard your story so many times, Tara! You just want to work! A friend of mine was actually told during an interview, why do you want to work here? You make more on unemployment. That’s a shame! Are you in Harford County Maryland? That’s where I am. All the best to you. Relying on God is the best thing you can do. Thank you for taking the time to read the donkey story.
GREAT WORK,KEEP IT UP…
Wow – a timely inspiration in more ways than one. Thanks for sharing it and making my Monday morning a bright one!
Heard the story many times but it’s brilliant to hear it again

I’m glad you shared this amazing story. I’d heard it a long time ago and was really glad to see you post it.

Great site and philsophy Sue.
Thankyou
Sue Great Story, I love people who share and think positively like yourself. Far too many poeple put their head in the sand and start the pitty party, never looking for the opportunity. I was one of those who was told my services werent needed anymore 8 months ago. I could have folded and blamed the President or the last President or I could have siezed an opportunity to take my future into my own hands. I chose to take control of my own destiny.
Great story Sue, it just goes to show how thinking differently and positively can bring about a positive outcome. Even if change is forced upon us it can be for the best in the long run if we think and act creatively.
Hi Sue,
I love you story but might have given the farmer a shot of penicillin.
Cheers
Great site Sue. Did you know that incognito protects donkeys as well as humans from mosquitoes?
I love this story – it’s a really good lesson. I had just posted something along the same lines about the Frog that keep swimming and rises to the top so he wouldn’t be drwoned in the cream he was in. Or remember the one with the two brothers and the dad put a pile of manuer in each of their rooms and one brother was certain there had to be a horse to go along with that and the other was just pessimistic. May we all rise to the top and triumph over our challenges. Blessings.
Really liked it
Hello Sue, what a great inspiring story…thanks for the share. Must always remember that your thiking and actions of today will make your tomorrow. Love, forgive, and live life to the fullest with gratitude and thankfulness.

Thanks for thi donkey story. It is truly an inspired one.
It is true description of what happned to me recently but God revealed to me the victory strategy – the choice is ours on ho we use a stone, it can stumble us and we fall or we can decide to step on it then we go higher and see further.
ITS AMAZING.
Thanks a million times

Hi Sue, great story! I needed a encouraging pick-me-up, and this sure was it! Thanks so much for sharing it!
It’s the age old idea that if you keep taking steps eventually you will succeed. It is the best life lesson of all for all of seeking to make money with Income Opportunities. Failure is not an option!
Great lesson it is!
Ahhh… so TRUE! Thank you so much for sharing this. It really put a smile on my face. I’d heard the story some long while ago, it was nice to hear it again.

Great website you have here but i seem to be having a problem downloading your RSS feed. Everytime i click it it comes up with error 500. It might be my own desktop. I have Linux with AVG AntiVirus. Im not sure if its Disabled. Let me know if anyone else has mentioned any faults or its just me. Im not too good with Laptops. I cant see my writing after submitting so im not sure if you will see this. Ill bookmark your site and check by in a couple of days for an answer. Please let me know if you know of a fix
I like the moral of the story and the ingenuity of the donkey. Thanks.
I am a great story lover and really enjoyed this story too Sue. Very true, we have a choice about the dirt that falls on us and if an ass can do it then I am sure we all can too!
~Marcus
Hi Sue,
Great Story!!! Loved it!!!
Hey Sue
Love the story.. We can all learn something from you. I especially love how you used the donkey in your story. Very cool
Craig
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the complement on my site, but am sorry to hear you had trouble with the RSS feed. No one else has mentioned it. You were not able to see your comment at the time, because I have comments set to be “approved” before it’s posted. I don’t know of a fix for the RSS feed. Have you had troubles on other sites? I look forward to hearing from you.
Great analogy and story. What a way to turn lemons into lemonades. A lot of people in that situation would have made a plain “ass” of themselves.
Steve Shoemaker
Hi Sue,
What a powerful lesson here, both how the donkey freed itself and the demise of the farmer
Thanks for sharing a telling tale.

Stu
Great story – can relate to it in many ways
Very nice story, maybe I’ll borrow it from whoever wrote it.
It’s even better when you get two lessons in one occurrence!
The trick of course is to be on the lookout for the lessons, and then to heed their value.
Thanks, John
Nice Job Keep It Up…
Great story Sue. Powerful lesson. Thanks for the invite.
Have an awesome day.
Hi Sue,
The story is very interesting and there are lessons that can be taken for all of us life lessons. But how that is done by way of the donkey is also something of genius, who also conducted human in human burying. Thank you for sharing with me.
Loved this story Sue.
Great story Sue. Thanks so much for sharing it.
What an amazing story … I <3 it!
oh Suiee Q,I Luv u,,,,great story on the donkey,,,geat lesson to be had by all….

Thanks for the invite Sue. The donkey story was fabulous…great metaphor, especially for those of us who are starting over and creating a new career late in life. My website/blog needs a few more shovels of dirt before it’s ready to see light, so the message for me is “keep on shoveling,” lol!
This was a great story Sue. The Lessons were my favorite, if only everyone used them, it would be a nicer world. Thanks for sharing this story with me.
That reminds me of an old saying “make certain what you do today don’t come back and bite you in the butt! Thanks for a great reminder Sue
Sue,
